From basic foundations through to advanced techniques, JSSS classes are kids swimming lessons with a difference.
John Sugden Swim School is the best place for your children to learn to swim, with unique, proven programs based on three development stages – Brain, Stimulation, and Movement. We offer specialized swimming classes at pools in Balwyn for children of all ages under 16 from Monday to Thursday, and in our swimming pool at Glen Waverley on Sunday. Our swimming program is developed for the swimmers to use their instincts to swim around in the water. The primary focus of this intensive swimming program for kids is on water safety. Proper instruction and kids swimming lessons help your kids develop vital skills that help them stay safe in and under the water.
With more than three decades of experience in designing professional coaching programs for swimmers and athletes, John Sudgen has developed a whole new approach to teach swimming in a way that redefines the swimming technique, the overall approach to swimming, and water safety for children with innovative swimming lessons.

max 3 Children in Class
Emu level cements the foundation that was developing in the Kangaroo Face-In level, that being, swimming movements on back and front into rolling over both ways. All four strokes become much more obvious at this level.
WOMBAT Swimming Lessons – max 3 Children in Class
KOALA Swimming Lessons – max 3 Children in Class
Class Time: 30 mins
Wombat is the first level you see your child become a Little Mini Swimmer in all 4 competitive swimming stroke MOVEMENTS, with a sense of ease through the water. Like all young children on land a big part of their development at WOMBAT level is to create energy and excitement surrounding these movements but with some body awareness.
Class Time: 30 mins
Koala continues to develop and create energy and excitement surrounding the movements of all 4 competitive strokes with body awareness but places much more emphasis on the quality of body position.
Class Time: 30 mins
Bilby moves into the swimmer self-correcting and refining the Head & Body Position during faster swimming in Freestyle, Breastroke & Backstroke. Butterfly still continues to be performed but with timing the emphasis.
Class Time: 30 mins
KOOKABURRA is a transition level from swimming lessons to entry level swimming squad. It runs for 45 mins continuing to develop awareness from the swimmers perspective so they can take ownership about their quality of body position.
Class Time: 45 mins
ROSELLA is the entry level swimming squad. It runs for 60 mins continuing to develop awareness from the swimmers perspective to increase quality of body position. ROSELLA swimmers take ownership over their quality of body position during faster swimming. Time Trials are introduced at this level to facilitate such ownership as it provides another level of feedback.
Class Time: 60 mins
NUMBAT is the Junior Squad. It is the squad preparing for competition, if the swimmer is interested. Guided by JSSS coaches the NUMBAT swimmers provide their own Goal Times, each term. This again helps to develop awareness & ownership over their quality of body position during very fast swimming, ie, during Time Trials. The most significant understanding required as a NUMBAT Swimmer is to recognise, learning to race with body position, now begins!
Class Time: 60 mins

When you plan to enroll in our kids swimming lessons, you need to make sure that your child learns the correct swimming techniques in the right learning environment. Childhood is the time when kids learn very quickly and develop high-level skills in any area they want to excel. It is therefore recommended for kids to start learning swimming as soon as they can from infants to 16 years of age.
At John Sudgen Swim School, we are dedicated to teaching professional swimming techniques along with the water safety lessons that are a must for children. We are dedicated to giving quality instruction and technique to children while in and around the swimming pools.
At John Sudgen Swim School, we make certain that the kids learn swimming in a fun, playful, comfortable and safe environment at all times. Our specialized swimming lessons for kids in offer a different approach to teaching swimming easily and efficiently with different stages of development. We go beyond the use of flotation equipment while teaching the kids to swim and help them develop and use their instincts to swim as naturally as possible inside water. Here’s why we outperform others when it comes to teaching your kids to swim in the water for early learners to children becoming expert in swimming.
We tend to follow a three-stage development process for teaching swimming most practically and the lesson stays with your kids life-long. We follow a unique development process with brain, stimulation, and movement being the three stages. In the first stage, the emotional comfort of the brain is established to swim underwater. Then follows the stimulation and movement stages to develop the mind-body connection when inside the water.
When your child starts to learn swimming, there is a lot more to learn than just swimming in the water. Kids should be taught how to stay safe when in and around water. Our comprehensive swimming program is focused on developing the water safety skills in kids and so they know how to survive when in water. We follow a step by step method to teach the complex task of swimming in an easy and highly efficient manner.
Our swim teachers are highly qualified and backed up by John Sugden with 25 years of experience. We’ve developed unique swimming programs and tought swimming classes for athletes and swimmers. Our classes are divided into 8 levels taught in 3 categories. The swimming levels are classified into learning to swim in the Billabong category, the Lake and the Ocean. Our trained and qualified teachers make sure that your child becomes a proficient swimmer by the end of this program learning all the water safety skills.
